Etiquette for Your Mother of the Groom Dress

Groom's MotherTraditional etiquette states the mother of the groom should wait until the mother of the bride has chosen a dress. The idea is for both mothers to end up wearing similarly formal dresses (one should not wear a ball gown if the other is wearing a strappy sundress).

Not all brides (and mothers of the brides) follow all etiquette rules. You may feel more comfortable wearing a pantsuit instead of a traditional formal dress. This is not a problem, but it should be discussed with the bride and her mother to avoid any awkwardness. More on Etiquette for Your Mother of the Groom Dress

10 Ways to Be Sure You’ll Buy the Perfect Wedding Dress

Beautiful Bridal DressMany brides have dreamt about that perfect wedding gown. For some it is a long, flowing designer gown, and others want a strapless number perfect for the beach. No matter what gown you dream about, there are still some ways to make sure you pick the right dress for your perfect wedding day.

Start Early

The earlier you start your search for your ideal wedding dress, the better off you will be. Most brides start their search 9 to 12 months before the wedding. This time frame allows you to look at a variety of dresses so you can find the right dress. It also provides time for alterations or special orders.

Get Pictures

If you have an idea of your wedding dress in your mind, it may not be the easiest way to get what you want. It is better is you have pictures from magazines or advertisements. If you are having a dress custom made, try to get a sketch of the dress so that the dressmaker knows your vision.

Even after you go and pick out the dress, you may want to take pictures of the dress so that you can find accessories for the wedding and reception. Maybe you have not picked out bridesmaids dresses and you want to find the right style to complement your dress or you want to know if a bouquet style will work with the dress. Having a photograph of your specific dress will help you out immensely.

Consider Your Body

Bridal Dress DetailYes, you may want that pretty mermaid dress you saw on the model in the magazine, but the style may make you look “hippy.” Even though you may like a dress, you need to make sure it fits you correctly. Bring the most honest person you know with you for trying on gowns so you can get a real opinion of what looks good.

Consider the Wedding Activities

Where are you getting married? What will the temperature be? What activities will go on at your wedding? Make sure you select a dress that is comfortable and appropriate. Remember that pretty mermaid gown? Well, does it allow you to dance? Can you walk easily down the aisle? If you can’t comfortably move around then you may not enjoy your day as much.

Also, make sure the dress is appropriate. You would not wear a full-sleeve, heavily beaded gown on the beach. You could pass out from the heat. Your dress should reflect the time of year and place of your wedding. Even though you may love a certain dress, be sure to ask yourself, “Do I want to love the dress or have fun at my wedding?”

Have a Budget

Even if you have an oversize budget for your wedding day you should still be conscious of how much you have allocated for your dress. You may want a couture gown, but have a department store budget. You can still find beautiful gowns on any budget. Keep your mind open while you watch your wallet so you can find the perfect dress without breaking the bank.
