Gone Shopping: Where to Buy a Wedding Dress

Shopping For A Wedding DressYou’re engaged, and you’ve decided to start shopping for that wedding dress. Where do you go? How do you know where to shop for a gown, and where can you find that perfect gown? Here are some ideas for places you can find your wedding dress:

Wedding Boutiques

Most people think of wedding boutiques first when they start shopping around for a bridal gown. There are thousands of boutiques from big franchises to small, independent stores. They usually have hundreds to thousands of gowns available in a variety of sizes and styles. These boutiques often have accessories and bridesmaids gowns, too.

The benefit of a wedding boutique is that you have such a wide selection. They have policies and procedures that are the same for everyone so you know what to expect. However, sometimes the dresses can seem a bit “cookie cutter.” Also, you can sometimes get “lost” or overwhelmed in a larger boutique.

Wedding Expos

Wedding expos are not necessarily the best places to buy your wedding dress, but you never know what you will find there. Many vendors attend these expos and you may be able to find a designer or boutique that you never even heard about before. Plus, you will have access to a lot of other vendors so you can compare and contrast prices and offers. Keep your mind open when you walk through an expo or bridal show.

Online Auctions

The Back Of A Wedding DressDream of a designer gown, but you are on a budget? Online auction sites and secondhand stores can be a great way to find designer dresses on a budget. Many brides do not want to keep their dresses and other women may not have gotten the chance to wear their gowns due to cancellations. You can often find excellent deals through sites that specialized in these gowns.

Seamstresses

If you have the perfect dress in mind but just can’t seem to find the gown anywhere, you could try getting a seamstress to make your dress from a pattern. Some seamstresses can easily make the alterations to a pattern so the dress fits your particular needs. Depending on the supplies, the dress may even be less expensive than what you find in a boutique or from a designer. However, make sure you trust your seamstress to get the dress done on time for your wedding.

Designers

For many people the label on the gown is just as important as the wedding dress itself. If you have your heart set on a designer gown, but you don’t want to spend too much, you could check to see when the designer is having a trunk show. You can often find beautiful gowns at lower prices at these shows. Designers may also take appointments to design and create a one-of-a-kind piece for you, too.

Keep your options open when you shop around for a wedding dress, especially if you have a particular dress in mind. Remember to try to find a picture of your dress so that salespeople and designers can help you get the dress you have always dreamed about.
